About Featherstone - Our Board

The board is resposible for Featherstone's financial future, and for ensuring that Featherstone lives up to the principles and purposes for which it was created.

A world class champion sailor in her youth, the late Virginia Besse was a member of the Martha's Vineyard Artists' Association and Old Sculpin Gallery, a well known fundraiser and supporter of Wheaton College, Dana Hall School. She was a board member of the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

The Featherstone Gallery is now known as the Virginia Weston Besse Gallery in honor of the fact that she was the impetus for Meetinghouse to purchase the former Featherstone Farm which is the current home of Featherstone Center for the Arts.

A lifelong teacher and professional puppeteer, she is involved with the Oak Bluffs Campground Association and is a realtor and a professional artist. She teaches puppetry and woodshop for children at Featherstone and is active on the center's Fundraising and Gallery Committees.

Jean McCarthy
A graduate of Brown University with an AB in American Civilization and an MAT in Social Sciences, Jean taught History and English at the Wheeler School in Providence, RI, and at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, MA, where she served as chair of the history department, as a member on fund-raising and evaluation committees, and as a teacher of Western Civilization, US History, and East Asian Studies. She studied in Japan as an exchange teacher, and she and her husband Jeremiah McCarthy took sabbaticals in the People's Republic of China whch included trips to Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Interested in painting and photography, Jean has studied with William Blakesley, Millie Briggs, Fred Messersmith, Patricia Blanc, and John Holladay.

Writing experience includes editing and proofreading -- as a copy trainee at Young & Rubicam in New York City -- and for various committees and publications. The Martha's Vineyard Historical Society, Friends of the West Tisbury Library and Featherstone are her volunteer interests.

Decades of practice of tennis and golf have yielded varying results. Jean is currently Women's A flight champion at Farm Neck Golf Club.

Having attended Bennington and Briarcliff College, she is active with the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust and the Chappaquiddick Community Center.  She has owned her own gift and interior design shop and has juried several art shows.  She is active in numerous garden clubs and is charge of the gardens on the grounds of Featherstone and she also serves on the Gallery Committee.

A graduate of Williams College and the University of Virginia he is the lead architect of MacNelly-Cohen architectural firm where he has designed numerous distinctive homes and buildings on Martha's Vineyard. He is active with the Martha's Vineyard Charter School. Past President of the Featherstone board, he currently chairs the center's Building and Grounds Committee and is responsible for the Master Plan for the center for additional growth.

An accomplished teacher and artist who had her first artist showing at Featherstone Gallery 5 years ago, she now has major successful shows on Newberry Street in Boston. She is chair of the arts for the West Chop community on Martha's Vineyard and continues her support of the arts through her philanthropy. She serves on the Fundraising Committee.

Anne's art is in the Hastings Collection out of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts and Sarasota, Florida and is Anne is an art member of the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown, MA.

An experienced woodcraftsman, he is actively involved with the Martha's Vineyard Farm Institute. He continues the long established philanthropic contributions of his family through the Kidder Family Foundation with a focus on land management and the arts.

Nancy graduated with honors from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston MA. She did post graduate studies in sculpture. She earned a BFA from the University of Hartford. She assisted in art therapy workshops in Hartford. She has been the curator for a large art collection, a commercial decorator and space planner at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Since moving to the Vineyard in 1992 she has worked with Literacy Volunteers and as a weekly volunteer at the Historical Society. She is active with figure drawing groups and is an oil and watercolor painter. She exhibits at Featherstone Center for the Arts Gallery and the Anna Maria Art Guild and the Longboat Key Art Gallery in Longboat Key, FL. She serves as the chair of the Featherstone Gallery Committee and joined the board in 2005.

Having worked in the marketing world and serving as a marketing manager for Amazon.com, she has recently joined the board contributing marketing expertise and bringing youthful vigor as a new mother and a new year-round resident of Martha's Vineyard.

Denys Wortman

A stockbroker in Boston for forty years, Denys Wortman now lives in his boyhood home in Tisbury which he re-purchased ten years ago.  He is president of the board of MVTV, Martha's Vineyard community based television station.  He is also a pilot and chapter president of the Experimental Aircraft Association, local chapter 1215.

In addition he serves on the board of Tisbury Water Ways (TWI) and was recently elected Selectman of the town of Tisbury.  He is curator of his famed cartoonist father's paintings and 6,000 cartoons.  (dwortman.com).

He serves on the Featherstone Gallery Committee.
