Vacation Cultural Collaborative Adventure
The Martha’s Vineyard Museum, The Polly Hill Arboretum, The FARM Institute, FeatherstoneCenter for the Arts, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and The Yard have collaborated in order to provide Vineyard families meaningful cultural experiences for their school age children during their school vacations. These six Vineyard cultural facilities are offering a Vacation Cultural Collaborative Adventure during the weeks of spring break, April 21 - April 25 and at the end of school, June 23 - June 27. These weeks of cultural explorationwill take place during the hours that Island youth would be in school from 8:30 am - 3 pm each day, therefore providing parents the opportunity to have their children experience the Vineyard during these transition times rather than offer traditional child care. Parents will deliver their children to a different facility each day for their day-long experience.
We believe that these adventure weeks will enrich their lives and give them an inside look of their Island treasures at a time reserved just for them. The Program will be offered to Martha’s Vineyard children in grades 1 -5 during the 2007/2008 school year.
At the beginning of each week, children will be given a blank journal for notes, artwork, writing and journaling throughout the week.
The program can accommodate up to 20 children for the week. The cost will be $250 for the week. Scholarships are available.
Monday: MV Museum (morning) - Explore some of Martha’s Vineyard’s historic treasures in downtown Edgartown and at the Museum through “Quests”, community treasure hunts. We will create our own personal stamps to “leave our mark” and show we have completed the Quests.Polly Hill Arboretum (afternoon) - What better place to discover tree lore, than amongst the beautiful plantings at Polly Hill Arboretum! With puppet master April Thanhauser,we will create woodland puppets and a puppet show to tell those stories.(Transportation between the Museum and Polly Hill will be provided as part of this program.)
Tuesday: The FARM Institute - Sheep on the farm means lots to do in the spring. Join us for a day-long immersion into the world of sheep & fiber to learn more sheep and the many uses of their wool. We will become shepherds in the field, nurture newborn lambs and spend time down in the Fiber Center where we learn through the art of doing. Carding, spinning and weaving are just a few of the options for the day.
Wednesday: Featherstone Center for the Arts - A day at Featherstone Center for the Arts will give the children an opportunity to explore the six and a half acres of this pastoral campus and incorporate nature into their arts experiences - ranging from opportunities to create pottery, explore traditional and digital photography and explore creativity through drawing, printmaking, weaving, and other forms of creativity at the four studios on the campus. They will also learn about and experience the aspect of the meditative and healing arts by venturing through the path of the new in-ground labyrinth.
Thursday: Felix Neck - Explore forest, field, marsh, freshwater pond, and salt water habitats to observe and investigate the wonders of nature. Using our journals, we’ll discover how these habitats are the same and how they are different. Our goal is to help your child have fun, and to enjoy, understand and appreciate the natural world around them through hands-on, inquiry based activities.
Friday: The Yard - The Yard will offer acting, singing, movement and improvisation. The Yard approach combines classic theatrical skill-building, creative thinking and group participation. The Yard’s all-star-no-star approach insures that all students participate equally. The day is designed to nurture talent, expand self-confidence and engage the imagination.
