January 10 - Saturday Adventure #1:
All About Penguins and Polar Bears
From Pole to Pole, we will venture out into the wild winter world - drawing, painting and sculpting. We will learn about birds and animals that revel in this season, including those who ski, sled and skate! We will draw inspiration from paintings and sculptures that celebrate the forms and colors of the snow covered landscape, as well of course, from your own eyes and experiences.

January 17 - Saturday Adventure #2:
Painting Your Way Around the World I
What is painting? Can you create a painting out of yarn and sand? What about egg yolks or layers of fabric? We are going to explore the many different ways people have created painting around the world and throughout history.

January 24 – Saturday Adventure #3:
Painting Your Way Around the World II
We are continuing today our two part Saturday Adventure series exploring the many different ways people have created paintings around the world. Yes we will get messy, again, like last Saturday.

February 7 - Saturday Adventure #4:
Hoola Coola Day
This is our annual day to “laugh at the cold” with a luau party highlighting a morning of fun!
Put away your winter coats, unpack your summer swimsuits and flip-flops for its limbo time! This adventure is always popular – because it is fun to dream of being warm again! We reach for the sunshine – paint it, create it and enjoy it! Aloha.

March 7 - Saturday Adventure #5:
Drawing Your Attention
Draw! Draw! Draw! This adventure class is for all young artists who want to practice drawing. Establishing a connection between seeing, feeling and line, we will draw from our observation and imagination using every material we can find to make wonderful marks.

March 21 - Saturday Adventure #6:
Spring Splash
We are going to set up a wet and wild obstacle course that we, with ski gear or surf boarding gear will “ride” the course. It is planned to be hilarious and challenging, too. The finish line is the best part… a riot, one might say. This is our last hurrah – a real “good-bye”to winter. Spring is around the corner. Are you ready? We think so? Good-bye winter!! Today, our morning is all outdoors and centered on the Children’s Green, near our studio. Good-bye winter!!

April 4 - Saturday Adventure #7:
HeART to HeART
Our Featherstone kids will bring art to the hearts of children with chronic medical conditions. In recognition of Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) and New Hampshire Partners in Health we will join in a creative approach to wellness for children with chronic medical conditions, as well as their siblings. Packets of our children’s designs for work one-on-one with DMS students in environs where children’s artistic expression is the priority will be forwarded in the hopes that our sensitive collaboration will make a difference in children’s lives in the north country. We are honored to participate.

April 18  - Saturday Adventure #8:

Do We Love Bunnies – Yes We Do!
Some bunny loves you – ‘tis a sweet expression often told. On our Children’s Green, near our trees and hollows are families of bunnies awaiting spring. We remember seeing them hopping across the pastures and fields that surround our campus. We will create a beautiful kaleidoscope featuring our paintings of these little creatures hopping in the round! We will challenge our Animals in Art classmates to join us with their amazing talent to do likewise. Faience sculptures from France (From Miss Lani’s travels) will be exhibited. April is the time to wish for bunnies return – let us nudge them along with our bunny spirit!

May 2 - Saturday Adventure #9:

World Turtle Day
World Turtle Day is in May. We have learned for four years how to continue to protect turtles and tortoise and their habitats. Yes, we will design and create our special garden-pond home for our faux turtles. This year we hope to invite Charlotte and Samantha Potter to share their experiences with their turtles. These sisters – twins – a dynamo team have nourished their pets and the amazing care they have cultivated is so special to absorb! As with each passing year, sensitivity and creative touches with pets is encouraged! Featherstone children form a very important key to recognizing the worth of turtles and tortoises world wide.

Miss Lani will share her slides of her Galapagos Islands experiences with giant tortoises including some enjoying mud baths on Indefatigable Island, there. The scientific led experiences at the Charles Darwin Research Stations are remarkable and important to share with you…Hopefully you will be astonished at the amount of creative force displayed by these creatures on these small, barren and rocky islands. Here’s to World Turtle Day – and all of our adventures. Today the Galapagos National Park and Marine Reserve are fighting for survival in a world where every thing is measured with economic value. May we NEVER forget that some things do not need to justify their existence; because they are priceless!

May 16 - Saturday Adventure #10:
Painting Your Way Around the World III
What is painting? Can you create a painting out of yarn and sand? What about egg yolks and layers of fabric? We continue our series started in January to explore the many difficult ways people have created paintings around the world and throughout history. With beautiful flowers, petals and seeds – be prepared to get messy!

Magic Garden Summer Camp
“Opening doors, opening minds” with Lani Carney

This summer art camp is for children, ages 3 - 6.  Magic Garden Summer Camp highlights the process of painting.  Classes are created in ways that are interactive, engaging and exciting. The process is the beauty for the young artist, not the outcome.

You will meet other Island families and those from afar, enjoy children-friendly walks in nature and create work in a peaceful, relaxing studio environment.  Art illustrator quality materials are utilized for watercolor, pastel, sketching with charcoal and Lyra watercolor pencils, collage, flower petals, sunflower art, silk and sand painting, copper, wood, clay sculpture and mosaics.

Miss Lani founded and teaches our Magic Garden Summer Camp and year-round art classes for children at Featherstone.  Her philosophy is to be “in touch” with our pre-school age children and youth as they participate in these activities in order that enjoyment is fostered.

A positive and nurturing climate is established because of the lovely quality of families we paint with and because we are present, we make time to talk individually with each child and interact respectfully with all children; each child is guided in positive peer interactions and behavior management strategies.

A natural and beautiful “order” is the result.  “Mirroring” behavior that is warm and joyful characterizes Miss Lani’s teaching expertise.  She believes our program is located in a place of rural Island dignity, like none other.  It carries physical embodiments of the past, but also maintains in its very air a rare serenity – an other worldliness.

Children ages 7 - 10 will enjoy our 3-D Arts Exploration Discovery Camp focusing on the creativity of 3-D objects of everything found in gardens.  Campers will have the opportunity to create garden installations and make garden art with a variety of materials. Every garden has ladybugs, butterflies, spiders and other colorful insects, imagine the scene as we recreate these critters from papier mache.  Ceramic flower pots and plates will be made in the pottery studio and decorated with mosaics. The most creative flowers will fill the pots along with colorful and imaginative grasses and even vegetables will be included in garden space. Three-dimensional birds will fly overhead while worms and snakes flourish beneath our feet. Stained Glass and More
“Crafts Explored” with Cara Yarhling

Cara Yahrling, Massachusetts Certified and Licensed 7-12 Art teacher at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School is excited to return to Featherstone this summer to offer students ranging in age from 11-teens a unique opportunity to learn the skills and techniques involved in a large range of classic crafts! As defined by dictionary is, a craft is a skill, especially involving practical arts - it may refer to a trade or particular art.  In this case, students will be offered the opportunity to explore many.  Everything from how to create original hand-cut stained glass panels that can be used in a window or cabinet, ancient Chain Maille patterns including the Byzantine box chain and the Japanese 4 in 1, how to make a clay whistle and the art of creating an ocarina flute that is tuned and plays a five note scale, how to work with clay slabs to create boxes that have feet and a lid with a handle, and jewelry techniques with copper acid etch relief on copper to create cuff bracelets, earrings, and pendants will be explored. The safe and proper handling of all tools and materials will be taught throughout the workshops.   At the conclusion of each workshop, students will prepare an exhibition where parents, friends, family, and students can exhibit, share and be influenced by the meaningful and good conversation that inevitably happens around interesting solutions, good craftsmanship and the inventions of creativity.

Weeks One, Four & Six (July 6, July 27 & August 10) – STAINED GLASS! Hand-Cut Copper Taped Stained Glass 6” x 6” panels

Crafts Explored students will have the opportunity to use their creative problem solving skills to design an original 6”x 6” stained glass panel based on the design principles of the Prairie Style that architect and stained glass artist Frank Lloyd Wright is known for.  Using this approach to design with beginner stained glass students is key due to the straight-line design elements that make scoring glass more accessible to beginners without sacrificing lovely design.  Students will learn how to frame their pieces using a ‘u’ shaped material called came which reinforces stained glass panels so they can be used in windows and cabinets.  This is a wonderful craft to know how to do that may empower young artists to learn the techniques involved in classic craft techniques. Note: we will be working with lead-free solder, flux, and 100-watt soldering irons, please discuss the more serious mature nature of this workshop with your child.  I will be thorough with safe and proper handling of all materials we work with.  All materials are provided.

Weeks Two and Five (July 13 & August 3) –WORKING WITH METAL! -CHAIN MAILLE and ACID ETCH RELIEF COPPER JEWELRY! The ancient art of weaving metal jump rings and acid etching on raw copper

Students will have the opportunity to learn ancient Chain Maille patterns that were invented by the Byzantine Empire and used by Samurai Warriors as suits of armor.  In modern times the Japanese 6 in 1 pattern has been used to create shark suits for ocean divers working in shark territories.  We will be working with fun and colorful anodized aluminum jump rings.  They are light-weight and easy to open and close with flat nose pliers.  The second half of the week we will tour design motifs from around the world.  Students will have the opportunity to design directly on raw copper, apply the enamel, I will put in acid bath, and once removed, it has a sharp relief edge (like engraving, but in this case the acid eats or bites away where the enamel marker is not).  Students will then have the opportunity to learn how to apply a patina (liver of sulfur, noxious but not toxic) to achieve a value contrast in their jewelry.  Using a bracelet mandrel and a rawhide mallet, what was once a strip of raw copper can now be worked around a wooden mandrel and take the form of a cuff bracelet.  Note: we will be working with a neutral solution consisting of iron chlorides (also known as perchloride) it is the safest solution available for biting copper plates. Exposure to this solution will NOT cause a chemical burn if rinsed with water.  Students will not be responsible for removing their work from the solution bath.

Week Three (July 20) –WORKING WITH CLAY!  Slab Boxes with feet and lid and Ocarina Flutes tuned to play a five-note scale

We will explore the fundamental slab building techniques with clay.  A number of surface designing techniques and tools, specifically the scgraffito tool will be explored.  Boxes will be assembled and glazed in the leather-hard stage (when the clay box is dry enough to be handled without becoming distorted, and still soft enough to be carved into).  During the end of our week, students will view examples of Ocarina flutes from all over the world.  To make a ball of mud whistle is really quite easy!  Using both ancient and modern techniques for the mouthpiece and whistle hole, students can as tradition has had it, turn their flutes into some sort of animal.  The most popular in South America is a turtle.  Some people may even remember them in the Legend of Zelda.  Note:  Due to the material we are working with, it is best (and more fun) to be able to attend all five days of this week’s workshops of Crafts Explored.  I will have to glaze fire all of the projects on Thursday so Friday’s attendance is important to pick up fired work and have our exhibition.

Roots & Shoots – third year highlights

Featherstone Center for the Arts continues to be an affiliate of the Jane Goodall Institute by sponsoring a youth Roots & Shoots group here on Martha’s Vineyard.  Our members participate as individuals in our group and as part of a global network.

Our mission at Featherstone is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for the environment, animals and the human community.  Children in our group remind us to formulate our wishes for World Peace Day December 22 as they do their part to continue to inspire gentleness on Winter Solstice day this holiday season.

In March 2006 Lani Carney initiated the request to form the Roots & Shoots group.  A college professor retired and Featherstone’s art teacher and founder of the past four years and present year-round arts program for children – Miss Lani remains grateful for Jane Goodall’s depth, vision and invaluable inspiration.  A glimpse from a Jane Goodall quote: “Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation.  Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light, they can open brick walls.  Imagine that brick walls are the problems we have inflicted on our planet.  Hundreds of thousands of roots and shoots, hundreds of thousands of young people around the world can break through these walls.  You can change the world.”

Essential service projects and monthly gatherings are key to the Featherstone Roots & Shoots meetings.  Specifically the group membership has grown to thirty-six children and their families.  The ages span from 5 to 12.  New members are always welcome.  To-date all Island towns are represented.  Our first celebration where we received our guardianship of twin chimpanzees, Golden & Glitter, who thrive in Tanzania, was held May 6, 2007 at the Art Cliff Diner – a sold out evening of two seatings of pancakes, dedication and joyfulness.  We believe the chimps sense that the children of Martha’s Vineyard are making a difference in their lives and the lives of other animals world-wide!  A second gathering to highlight our convergence as a group was held November 18, 2007 Sundaes and Kites on Sunday was a successful, playful afternoon held on the Children’s Green at Featherstone where favorable breezes stimulated children (more than forty children and over thirty and moms and dads) to dash, play and view the soaring of kites high in the clear sky.  Delicious ice cream confections, a warming fire pit all helped to create an experience and awareness to support CARE and CONCERN for the HUMAN COMMUNITY.

The second pancake evening was held June 1, 2008; our third annual pancake supper at the Art Cliff Diner will be May 31, 2009. The second kite event: 2008 Sundaes and Kites event was held November 23, 2008.

Furthermore, agenda highlights involve regular monthly meetings which are held on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Children’s Studio at Featherstone.  A light supper is served for the children and their families.

As an example of our program overview:  Our December 2008 meeting focused on the care and concern for animals whereby our group gave extra help to animals that had been abandoned and are in the care of animal shelters and/or at the MSPCA. Children created dog and cat toys iced and decorated, stuffed cat-nip (Island-grown) into sachet pillows.  Each family delivered small tins with these treats to island town animal control officers for distribution to orphaned animals.  This effort was connected to our art adventure class enrollees Operation Santa Paws.  Thirty-six children participated with incredible spirit and talent!

Miss Lani’s recent trip to the Galapagos Islands in August 2008 has motivated an even greater interest in the creative power of animals worldwide. Her experiences have given way to curious and delightful inquiries by her children enrolled in Featherstone’s art classes.

For those interested in joining Miss Lani and these compassionate children, please know there is no fee for children or their families.  A generous gift from Liam and Faithe’s parents – David and Tanya Murphy of Chappy has underwritten our yearly operational costs.  Miss Lani, our energetic coordinator, volunteers her time and expertise.  Contact her at Featherstone: 508-693-1850.
